1966 ABARTH 1000 SP
In 1966, the turning point came to Abarth with the SE04 project for the Fiat Abarth 1000 SP, where 1000 indicates the displacement in cubic centimetres and SP the initials of Sport Prototipo.
The car boasted efficient solutions but at the same time simple enough to make it manageable even by private drivers, among which in fact it was a great success
The 1000 Sport Prototipo was the latest evolution of the Abarth twin-axle built around the Fiat 600 base. The unit, centrally located, developed 105 HP at 8000 rpm. Considering that the displacement was less than a litre (982 cm3), it can be seen that the engine exceeded 100 CV/litre. A value for the time definitely high considering that the 1000 SP was designed to excel both in short uphill races but also in long and demanding endurance races.
The lightweight chassis and the polyurethane and fiberglass body contained the total weight at 480 kg dry, allowing a maximum speed of over 220 km/h.
The 1000 SP starts immediately to achieve success, also taking part in important endurance competitions.
Benefiting from numerous evolutions and transformations, the car continues to run for more than a decade, giving many satisfactions to private drivers, willing to wait a long time before receiving their own ordered car in Abarth.
